THE PATRIARCHAL PERIOD

Genesis chapter 12 introduces us to this period, which spans from Abram to the death of Joseph in Genesis 50.

 

The Life Of Abraham (Gen 12-25:11)

  1. Abram is called out of Ur
    1. At the age of 75, he traveled to Haram
  2. The Abrahamic Covenant (Gen 12:1-3)
    1. Consisted of 3 things:
  • Promise of land
  • Promise of a great people
  • Promise of the blessing
  1. The land was not given to Israel because they deserved it
    1. (Deut. 9:4-6) God had given the nations who occupied it time to repent
      (Gen 15:12-16)
    2. Abraham was not a Jew since there were no Jewish people He is the father of the Jewish people (Rom 4:1)
    3. He is the Father of people of faith (Rom 4:13)
  2. Abraham rescues his nephew Lot (Gen 14)
    1. Bargains over 10 righteous
    2. Lot’s daughters’ children were father to the Moabites and Ammonites (Bitter enemies of Israel later)
  3. Abraham pays tithes to Melchizedek (Gen 14:17)
    1. Both a priest and a king
    2. Christophany
    3. Jesus is considered a priest after the order of Melchizedek (Heb 7:16-17)
  4. God’s covenant with Abraham (Gen 15)
    1. The sign of circumcision
  5. Abraham’s impatience to wait on Isaac
    1. They give birth to Ishmael
    2. Had trouble ever since
  6. Issac was born (Gen 21)
    1. Abraham is 100 years old
    2. This was 25 years after the promise
  7. God tells Abraham to sacrifice Isaac (Gen 22)
    1. It was a 3-day journey
    2. Abraham knew that he and Issac would return (Gen 22:5) Compare with (Heb 11:19) Similar to God sacrificing His own Son (3 days)
  8. Sara lived 127 years (Gen 23:1)
    1. This is the only place in the OT where a woman’s age is mentioned.
    2. She is buried in the cave of Machpelah (Gen23:9)
    3. Three couples are buried there Abraham and Sara, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah
  9. Abraham sends his servant to find Isaac a wife (Gen 24)
    1. Here are the things to look for (Not a bad way to find a wife today)
    2. Not a Canaanite (Shared common things) (Gen 24:3)
    3. Seek the leadership of the Lord (Gen 24:7)
    4. Attractive (Gen 24:16)
    5. Moral (Virgin) (Gen 24:16)
  10. Abraham dies at the age of 175 (Gen 25:7)

The Lives Of Isaac And Jacob (Gen 25:12-36:43)

  1. The generations of Ishmael (Gen 25:12)
  2. The generations of Isaac (Gen 25:19)
  3. There was conflict in the home of Isaac and Rebekah
    1. It had much to do with favoritism Isaac favored Esau and Rebekah favored Jacob. Birthright gave 2 benefits
  • Double portion of inheritance 2/3rd to 1/3rd
  • Leadership responsibility Older sons were part of the decisions
    1. Esau did not respect his birthright (Heb 12:16)
  1. God renews the covenant with Isaac (Gen 26:3-4)
  2. Esau married outside the faith (Gen 26:34-35)
    1. This grieved Isaac. The story of passing the blessing is like a soap opera
    2. It reminds us of the sovereignty of God to work through the failures of man
  3. Jacob flees for fear of Esau
    1. He dreams of angels ascending and descending (Gen 28)
    2. Called the place Bethel – House of God (Gen 28:19)
  4. Jacob worked for seven years for a wife
    1. The deceiver is outwitted by her father. He is given Leah
    2. Works for 7 more years for Rachael
  5. Jacob wrestles with God (Gen 32:23)
    1. Perhaps another Christophany
  6. Jacob has 12 sons
    • Reuben
    • Simeon
    • Levi
    • Judah
    • Issachar
    • Zebulon
    • Joseph
    • Benjamin
    • Dan
    • Naphtali
    • Gad
    • Ashar
  7. Jacob’s name is changed to Israel
  8. Esau reconciles with Jacob (Gen 33:4)
    1. No explanation given why he changed his mind about Jacob but is a beautiful story of forgiveness. Jacob favored Joseph over the others. You would have thought he would have learned a lesson from his own story

The Life Of Joseph (Gen 37-50)

What a great story! Joseph received a double portion of inheritance because Jacob made Joseph’s two sons (Ephraim and Manasseh) tribes. There is no tribe of Joseph because of this. Levi was also not a tribe but mixed in among the 12 tribes.

  1. Joseph dreamed about his success
  2. Joseph’s brothers sell him to a band of Egyptians
  3. Joseph grows in Potiphar’s house
    1. He is accused by Potiphar’s wife
    2. One of the great examples of how to avoid sexual sin, He ran
  4. Joseph is thrown in prison where he meets a person and interprets a dream
    1. This introduces him to the King
    2. Yet he wasted in the prison for 2 years (Patience to wait on God)
  5. Famine brought Jacob’s family to Egypt and he provides for them
    1. One of the great verses in the bible (Gen 50:19) Am I in the place of God
    2. Joseph lived to be 110 Made them promise to take his bones to the Promised Land
  6. None of the Patriarchs were perfect but passing the blessing was a sign of faith according to Hebrews 11 Each one called their sons in and said, I did not live to see the day that we would live in the land, but you will and thus passed on the blessing.
