The Greatest Commandment
Pastor Rick examined Matthew 22 and Jesus’s response to the Sadducees’ trick question about resurrection and marriage. He highlighted how Jesus avoided getting caught up in hypothetical debates, instead pointing to what truly matters: that God is the God of the living, not the dead. This led to the Pharisees’ question about the greatest commandment, which Jesus answered by summarizing all of God’s law into two categories: love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. Pastor Rick emphasized that loving God isn’t the problem—the struggle is putting Him above everything else that competes for our attention. He illustrated how when we genuinely love God, it transforms our desires, priorities, and actions. He then shifted to the second commandment, explaining that loving others means denying ourselves and putting their needs ahead of our own, not self-centered living. Using Scripture from Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and John 13, he concluded that the most evangelistic thing the church can do is love one another with respect and unity.
